Remember that old story about Lassie, the Yorkshire collie dog?

Without a grounding in statistics, a Data Scientist is a Data Lab Assistant.
Martyn Jones
Hold this thought: There are big lies, damn big lies and data science with an AI chaser.
Statistics is a science, and some would argue that it is one of the oldest sciences.
Statistics can be traced back to the days of Augustus Caesar. He was a statesman, military leader, and the first emperor of the Roman Empire. Some set its provenance even earlier.

Martyn Richard Jones, A Coruña, 9th April 2025
In a compelling lecture by Enrique Javier Díez, a respected professor at the University of León, he opened with the well-worn Chinese proverb: “Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime.” A familiar refrain, often invoked in discussions of education and empowerment, it was a fitting start — but Díez, with the precision of a seasoned academic and the urgency of a citizen deeply attuned to the injustices of our time, was not content to leave it there.

In our real and imaginary worlds, there is good and bad. But what does it mean?
Although not as clear-cut in all circumstances as some people might like, their use is valid. They offer a philosophical and ethical view of things, society, culture, and ideas, as well as providing a starting point for discussions on values and principles.
