Dedication

This book is dedicated to the great, compassionate, and visionary individuals. They have profoundly shaped my political journey. They have also influenced how I understand the world. Their courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice have inspired me and countless others. Their actions have made an indelible impact on the political landscape of recent times.

I dedicate this work to the leaders and thinkers from across the political spectrum. They have shaped my understanding of solidarity, equality, and the state’s role in addressing human suffering and inequality. This includes Nans Jones. Her tireless dedication to Welsh independence and culture laid a firm foundation for me. Dafydd Wigley and Gwynfor Evans of Plaid Cymru advocated for the Welsh language and the rights of the Welsh people. Their advocacy continues to resonate deeply in my heart.

I also owe an immense debt of gratitude to the Labour Party figures who have influenced me over the years. Albert Wilks demonstrated humility and commitment to the working-class struggle, leaving an enduring mark. Tony Benn, with his eloquence and radical vision for social justice, inspired a generation. Denis Healey provided practical experience and political insight, guiding the Labour movement through turbulent times. These figures exemplified the belief that politics could be an instrument of liberation and dignity for all.

Beyond British borders, I look to the Spanish political giants who have left their mark on the world stage. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero’s leadership navigated Spain through economic crises and historic social reforms. Pedro Sánchez is committed to progressive politics in modern Spain and continues to shape the country’s future. María Jesús Montero Cuadrado’s fiscal policies and progressive values have significantly contributed to Spain’s social welfare system.

The legacy of the Spanish Communist Party is exemplified by figures like Julio Anguita, Santiago Carrillo, and Felipe Alcaraz. It has profoundly influenced my understanding of the need for transformational change. This includes pursuing a more just society where class struggle is not an abstract notion but a call to action.

I also extend my gratitude to global figures who have guided me in the quest for justice, truth, and solidarity. Jim Callaghan demonstrated pragmatic political leadership, helping navigate challenging moments. Harold Wilson’s vision of a fairer society within the British Labour framework still resonates today. Barbara Castle’s tireless efforts in social justice and women’s rights continue to inspire. I am deeply influenced by John Prescott, Rosa Aguilar, and Yolanda Diaz. Aitor Esteban, Jose Bono, and Iñaki Anasagasti also shape my views. They have all shown that progressive politics must be rooted in both compassion and strength.

On the international stage, I find myself indebted to figures like Jesse Jackson. His advocacy for civil rights and equality transcended borders. Willy Brandt’s vision of détente in Europe provided hope for reconciliation. François Mitterrand’s leadership in France remains a symbol of dignity and progressive values. The work of General U Thant inspired me to question oppression and inequality. Malcolm X, Al Sharpton, and Theodor Adorno also challenged me in their own unique ways.

I also turn to the likes of Paul Foot. His fearless investigative journalism and commitment to exposing societal injustice resonated deeply with me. Alexei Sayle, Mark Steel, Jeremy Hardy, and Stewart Lee inspired me with their wit and intellect. They taught me that political discourse can be incisive. They also showed it can be witty. Paul Robeson’s music and activism have influenced my understanding of politics. José Mujica’s humility and dedication to social justice have shaped my perspective. Paul Kennedy’s intellectual depth has also contributed to how I view the intersection of politics and the human experience.

The thoughts and writings of Sheila Fitzpatrick have provided me with the theoretical tools. The insights from the Bloomsbury Group also equipped me to critically engage with society and politics. Additionally, Karl Marx’s works have been instrumental in this endeavour.

Above all, I dedicate this book to my father. His unwavering love, wisdom, guidance, and political consciousness have been a constant source of strength. Without him, none of this would have been possible. We will always be fellow travellers, father and son, to the end.

This dedication reflects not just the individuals who have shaped me. It also encompasses a broader tradition of resistance, compassion, and political vision. This tradition has spanned generations and continents. Together, they create a tapestry of ideas. These ideas and actions continue to inspire us. They challenge us to build a better, more just world.
