The origins of data warehousing are often pinned to the late 1980s, when the term “business data warehouse” first appeared in an influential IBM Systems Journal article by researchers Barry Devlin and Paul Murphy. I was based in Birmingham at that time, and I also wrote a similar foundational document on Information Centres for Sperry Univac.

Yet, as with many technological breakthroughs, the story is far richer and older than the conventional narrative suggests. The foundational components of what we now recognise as a data warehouse were quietly taking shape as early as the 1960s, driven by the need to organise, integrate, and analyse growing volumes of business information in an era of punch cards, magnetic tape, and the first mainframes.

The fortress has been replaced by something that resembles a hyperscale cloud platform. This platform can run your AI models and your CEO’s dashboard simultaneously. Hype and Misleading Claims Surrounding Data Lakehouses

A data lakehouse is marketed as a hybrid architecture. It combines the low-cost, flexible storage of data lakes. These lakes handle raw, unstructured data at scale. It also offers the structured querying, performance, and ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) transactional capabilities of data warehouses. Vendors like Databricks coined the term. Snowflake and others promote it as a platform for analytics. It serves AI and machine learning needs. This approach eliminates data silos and reduces redundant copies. It enables cost-effective scaling through open standards and decoupled storage and compute models. However, much of this is hype driven by vendor marketing. Vendors promote it as an evolution from “data swamps” (unmanaged data lakes) and rigid warehouses.

He advises Fortune 500 companies on how to turn data into gold or whatever it is they do these days. And he’s written this thing called “5 Powerful AI Kickers That Can Boost Any Stupid Business Idea”. Dated 2 June 1956, which is… well, that’s in the future from when most of us are living, but apparently not for Bernard. Bernard’s already there, living in 1996, sipping his AI-brewed coffee, watching the robots do the heavy lifting.

And the article starts… it starts like this: “So you’ve got a great business idea. It’s a start…” A start. A start. As if having an idea is some kind of achievement in itself.

Why Our AI Hypecycle Keeps Eating Itself

Walk through any tech conference today, and you can feel it: the hum of inevitability. AI will cure diseases. It will drive cars and write novels. AI will run governments. If you believe the BS booth graphics, it will probably solve loneliness, too.

The problem is, we’ve been here before.

Artificial intelligence has been promising to change everything since the 1950s. And every decade or so, we rediscover the same fundamental truth: machines don’t magically create wisdom. They just scale whatever understanding, or misunderstanding, we feed them.

I know this because I spent years building the early stuff. Neural networks, parallel distributed processing, and automatic feature extraction. The “deep learning” of 1987 with less RAM and worse haircuts. The technology was exciting, even miraculous. But back then, as now, it struggled to live up to the grand claims that surrounded it.

And today, the hype is louder than ever.
