Hold this thought: ‘There are big lies, damn big lies and big data science’.

Statistics is a science. Some argue that it is the oldest of sciences. It can be traced back in history to the days of Augustus Caesar, and before.

In 1998, Lynn Billard wrote a paper that laid out the role of the Statistician and Statistics. She stated that “no science began until man mastered the concepts and arts of counting, measuring, and weighting”.[1]

Artefacts for Enterprise Information Management

Key Data Warehousing Reference Architecture Components

Martyn Richard Jones

As an effective business process paradigm and a powerful mixture of technology, engineering and pragmatic design, Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW) is arguably unmatched in its capacity to address complex and essential information requirements in Management Reporting, Business Intelligence (BI) and Data Analytics. In spite of the occasional outbreak of anecdotal ruminations to the contrary, key indications point to a bright future for EDW. Indeed, the breadth and richness of nascent applications, that the EDW model can adequately support, will drive an expansion in its utility, acceptance and advancement. For instance, a significant and practical way of maximising the value of innovation and investment in Enterprise Data Warehousing is by reusing and extending the Inmon paradigm to construct the enterprise information hub of the future.  Old advice is still good advice, if it is truly good advice.

Martyn Richard Jones

It’s an older piece (from the nineties), but a lot of it is still relevant and pertinent.

So, here is a brief run-down on how to avoid crashing and burning Data Warehousing.

Understand that a Data Warehouse should only contain subject oriented, integrated, non-volatile and time-variant information to support strategic and tactical requirements of management – Keeping the purpose of the Data Warehouse highly focused will eliminate the dilution of a Data Warehouse solutions effectiveness. If what Bill Inmon said in this respect almost invariably results in successful DW projects – and that’s not speculation but proven fact – then I don’t see any rational reason at the moment to change our views on this. In the dim and distant past most organisations struggled along with what they euphemistically referred to as Information Systems.

They were Information Systems with no overall design, no elements of management and no architecture.

Information Systems were built to show how the company had been performing in the immediate past, and that was it. Continue reading →

Let’s get this baby off the ground

This weekend I read a piece on the Information Management website by Steve Miller with the title of Big Data vs. the Data Warehouse. It’s an old piece, from March 2014.

It was in response to a piece by Bill Inmon titled “Big Data or Data Warehouse?” Turbocharge Your Porsche – Buy an Elephant, in which he singled out for criticism the ad campaign of a big-data and Hadoop promoter.

The problem with Data Warehousing is that at a superficially high level, it is very easy to explain, and it’s quite impressive that this superficially high level is all that a lot of people need in order to do data warehousing their own way.

’m in a board room, addressing the assembled bunch of socially challenged IT management and hangers-on.

I explain, in simple language, how they can and should implement Enterprise Data Warehousing iteratively and agilely, and why they should do so rather than other approaches. I also explain how to do Business Intelligence, again, both iteratively and agilely.

They, the assembled suits, wring their hands and say, “We can’t do it any differently now, we have to deliver everything we promised by September, or we are screwed”.

Some people claim that strategy is primarily about building advantage[1]. My view is that this is not strictly accurate. Strategy is about overcoming significant challenges and achieving significant objectives; it is not intrinsically about building advantage, as if business operated in a perfectly symmetrical universe where commercial life played itself out as some perfect tinsel town idea of what business should be and what success should look like.
